Light wells are mainly used to supply air and light to the corresponding basement rooms. Depending on the soil and water conditions, the right light well must be installed, which has a significant impact on costs. If the soil is permeable, a fiber-reinforced plastic mast is usually sufficient. If the water is pressurized, the mast must also be resistant to pressurized water and installed accordingly. In terms of thermal protection Manufacturers of light well systems must comply with the latest EnEV requirements. High-quality light trees are also reliable Anti-burglary protection and reduce contamination from dirt, dust or leaves – some models also protect against unwanted small animals.
Structural characteristics of a light well
The correct construction of the light spaces requires that the upper edge of the window is illuminated by a wedge of light. If the soil is permeable, the light well is usually equipped with a drain at the bottom, connected to a special percolation pack or to the rain drainage system. Pressure-tight trees usually have no drainage; the upper opening must be protected from rain water. Since there is usually a waterproof basement in such water conditions, it is also possible to install additional waterproof windows. The upper opening, however, is always equipped with a grate or (in the completely new versions) a glass cover, which also protects against thieves and falling leaves in autumn.
On the market you will find two types of light wells:
Models firmly attached to the masonry (usually)
The first variant must be statically effective because it is part of the masonry and therefore requires reliable insulation from cold and moisture. This type of skylight consists of prefabricated elements made of concrete or glass fiber reinforced plastic (GRP; they are fixed by screwing.
Light wells installed separately from the surrounding masonry (renovation)
The second type of basement well requires a foundation that is poured next to the building. Therefore the trees do not come into direct contact with the object.
Suggestion: Regardless of the type of light well, be sure to install the window at least 20 cm above the bottom edge of the light well. This avoids possible blockages: a clear advantage in terms of drainage.
