It is not only the Italian lifestyle that impresses the Germans, but also the Mediterranean architecture. More and more homeowners want to bring a piece of Italy home and enjoy the southern atmosphere within their own four walls. The Mediterranean architectural style, which especially has its models in Tuscany, remains an often desired exterior. But what ultimately creates a Mediterranean atmosphere is probably in the eye of the beholder.
Climate influences structural strategy
The climatic conditions of the Mediterranean region differ significantly from our climate in Germany, at least in northern and central Germany, which must absolutely be taken into account during construction. For example, Mediterranean houses are more oriented towards shading, which in our area quickly leads to insufficiently lit environments. It’s important to find a good balance here.

Use of German building materials in accordance with climatic conditions
Some building materials that are used in Southern Italy and which can also be imported do not resist our climatic conditions. Especially frosty periods in Germany leave their mark quickly. But in Germany there are also materials that meet meteorological and aesthetic requirements. The Braas company offers for example the “Saphier”, a tile whose shape and appearance are ideal for this architectural style, but which also has its price. A cheaper option is to use a two-tone concrete tile.
Cost factor: stylistic elements in external architecture
Small side roofs, covered or open porches loosen the overall picture and give the house a southern flair. What in old Tuscan houses was solved with simple means, such as connecting the roof to the wall with mortar, here too must withstand the strict control of a construction manager and comply with the DIN standard. That is why such constructions are usually not available for little money. The slightly stronger, warmer tone of the plaster facade creates southern charm. Facing brick stones are now also available that fit well with the architectural style. The price varies depending on the additional components required, such as porches, covered corridors or cornices.
Lots of terracotta for a Mediterranean atmosphere
Not only can you work on the external appearance, but you can also design the interior in this style. Here it is above all the floors, stairs and parapet covers that are covered in terracotta. Since this material is usually a little more open, the classic red wine stain can become a lasting memory. It is therefore recommended to seal these areas before use.
